Matthew Thornton (March 3, 1714 – June 24, 1803) was an Irish-born Founding Father of the United States who signed the United States Declaration of Independence as a representative of New Hampshire. The New Hampshire College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts was established in 1866 in Hanover, NH and affiliated with Dartmouth College. Problems arouse in the relationship between the two schools and it became necessary to explore alternatives for the agricultural college.
